How to Be a Ventriloquist
FIND A VOICE:
Think of every time you’ve ever attempted or seen someone else attempt ventriloquism. Try it now. Hear that squeaky little voice? That’s the one everyone starts with. It doesn’t hurt to start with it.
Everyone needs a voice.
CONTROL YOUR TONGUE:
Put your top teeth gently on your bottom lip, leaving your lips parted. Now, without moving your lips say “Hello!” in that squeaky little voice. See how easy that is? Use your tongue, not your lips.
Life is easier when you learn to control your tongue.
LEARN TO SUBSTITUTE:
You can’t say the labial sounds “B, P, V. M, F, W” without using your lips. Try it… see? So instead you substitute another letter: Here are the substitutions D=B, T=P, buzzing Th=V, N=M, soft Th=F, and oo=W.
Things are better when you learn to compromise.
PLAY, DON’T MANIPULATE
Making a puppet appear real is much more important than the “mechanical” part of ventriloquism. When people are looking at the puppet, they’re not looking at your lips. The way to make a puppet appear real is to remember what it was like to play with dolls or stuffed animals.
Everyone likes to play – no one likes to be manipulated.
SAY SOMETHING IMPORTANT
…especially if you are speaking to children. Anyone who has a captive audience of children has a responsibility. Children remember what they hear, and mimic what they see.
Speak mindfully to children.
